Canada

Canada, Canada, Canada
i got back from the Beach Trip on a late Saturday night, spent Sunday packing, then left again early Monday morning. This caper started a few months back after my mom read a book called Love Does by Bob Goff. This is an incredible story that shares the experience of witnessing the love that Jesus was talking about, and shows what it looks like today’s world. Bob Goff, giving just one example of what love does, put his phone number in the back cover of the book so that people could call him with any questions or comments about the book, or if they just wanted to say hey. Because Love does things like this, we decided to send him a message on Twitter (we thought calling him would be weird), and he responded! He happened to be a fan of our show so my mom emailed him after he responded saying we would send him some books. He responded with an invitation for our whole family to come to his summer retreat/camp in Canada. We only received two more emails: the first giving us the date of it, and giving us directions on how to get there plus saying 150 other people we did not know would also be attending. Because Love does great things, my Mom, my Dad, Sadie, MK (aka: bæ, or for the older; my girlfriend) and i packed our things and left for Canada. After a quick stop at Disneyland in L.A. and coffee from the first Starbuck's ever located in Seattle, we made it to Canada. It was beautiful! As soon as we opened up the door to the seaplane Bob was there waiting with a big smile. He gave each of us a hug and told us “Welcome home!”...even though we had never been there or actually met him before. It was the best welcoming i have ever had! After the rest of the 150 people got there, i quickly realized that hardly anyone else had any more information than i had. There were musicians, songwriters, rappers, tv stars, directors, producers, news anchors, bloggers, authors, artists, psychiatrists, doctors, lawyers, diplomats, Olympic athletes, chefs, Americans, Canadians, Ugandans, and some people who really didn't do anything. We all had one thing in common: all we had received was an invite and directions. Not one bit of other information about it was given to anyone attending, but that was how it was supposed to be. This is uniquely similar to Heaven, nobody was really sure what they were getting themselves into or who else would be there, but despite their lack of information they said yes and committed themselves and that is what’s important. We ended up having an amazing time in Canada and learned so many things, but unfortunately too many things to talk about on this.

The main things that i do not feel will never leave me are:

1.) Sometimes you faced with things that you just have to make a blind decision on in order to experience great things, like the great things love does. When considering whether or not to take someone’s offer to experience what we did, don't look at who else is going to be there or little unnecessary details like that. Consider the person who invited you, and whether or not if saying yes in that situation is the most loving thing possible to that person.
2.) Love does great things. ALWAYS make your decisions by determining if it is the most loving thing possible. 1 Corinthians 13 is a good list of guidelines for what the most loving thing usually looks like if you need help with that.

3.) The trip allowed me to watch my dad learn. The Bearded Men never stop learning. As far as i can tell, my dad could go the rest of his life not knowing anything new, but he doesn't. He is constantly studying and learning new skills and gaining more knowledge. That is a mark of a great man. Hopefully i will still be learning when i am no longer Young and Beardless.

  3. Thank you, John Luke, for your stories. You and Wil let my granddaughter stand with you when you were in disguise. You were both in your yellow jeep. Thank you so much for being so kind.

  4. So great you've started a blog! I actually found you through Twitter because I know some of the bloggers who were at Bob's place with you in Canada...and they tweeted about your mom traveling with them overseas soon, and then I saw her tweet about you starting a blog...how fun to go to Disneyland and then to Canada...so FUN you were there. I met Bob Goff and read Love Does when he came to our church to speak in Southern CA last year, and he is so wonderful and generous and wise! I'm a blogger too and I so believe in us all telling our stories and our perspectives of the world. May God bless you as you write! (And our family and our kids especially love your family and the show...they are 12, 10, 8, 6 yrs old...xo)

  9. The Bible says that right now we only know ‘in part’ and that one day, after we’ve gone, we’ll know 'in full.' That makes more sense to me because it means our understanding will always have gaps and gaps are good because they leave room for God to fill in the spaces." ~ Love Does by Bob Goff

  12. What a great blog post about love and your experience in Canada with your family! I am your newest follower, but don't get too excited. Although bearldess like yourself, I am not young. I'm a Christian, a retired teacher, a grandmother, a fellow blogger and a seller of vintage on Etsy. I live in Oklahoma and attend Park Plaza. Keep writing and have fun doing this blog!

  13. Hey John Luke. Great blog post.

I was actually with you in Canada. Our family made some great memories there.

You bragged on your dad so I want to take a second to brag on you. Each morning Bob led a little Bible study down on the pier. The first morning we were there I reluctantly drug myself out of bed and went down.

When I got there you were there as well. You looked about as awake as I did. :) I was so impressed that on your own you had taken the initiative to come and be a part.

I prayed that morning that one day my three boys would have an equal desire to grow and learn like you. I continue to be so proud of the way you're using your platform. Keep up the great work.

  14. Hello John Luke,
Being only a couple years older than you, I can say that you helped me realize and reflect on something. We have very little details about heaven yet that it going to AMAZING. Yet you are right a lot of people make the decision to be Christians based on other people (girlfriend, boyfriend, family, etc.). I myself had done this until recently, when I realized that cost to truly follow my/our Father was very little compared to what we owed and decided to get to know my Father, so I can share with others who He truly is. A Christian choosing to live a life pleasing to Christ, wants to know God, without knowing much about what is in store for us. I think it is extremely important that we as Christians make the decision not knowing what heaven will be like or who will be there, but just as you said because of knowing who has offered us with this "once in a lifetime" opportunity. You are very right my brother. Thank you for sharing and keep it coming as you have wisdom beyond your years! I may never meet you in this life, but I look forward to hanging out with you in the place our Father has prepared for us! Take care brother!

  17. John Luke,
my name is Tyler Mcferran. To be honest, you have probably seen a lot, if not then all, of my comments on twitter and including on your blog. You have re-tweeted and favorited a handful of my tweets and hopefully have gotten this chance to read a few of these comments. I just wanted to let you know, though, these comments are not any sort of scam. I really did send letters down to White Ferry Road church and Lori Easterly put them in Al's mail box he has down there and I asked her if she knew if he had taken them by any chance. She told me the letters were gone so he must have taken them. I know it may be impossible to find them by now since it has been a little while but with your permission, I would be more than happen to resend them again. Also, you posted on twitter that we can email Jess@wmeentertainment.com if we have a fun event we would like you to attend. I emailed this woman, however, it was not about an event. It was simply personal and I hope you get the chance to read it. If you are reading this then I want to thank you for taking the time to read this and you may contact me by this email address or on twitter:
